Such a huge range of possible causes can be hard to digest…literally! This is why many researchers are now trying to look at what could be the root, root cause.ĭid you ever suck your thumb as a child? Or did you have that special comfort blanket or toy you loved to put in your mouth as a toddler?Ĭhewing or sucking on objects in animals is now believed to be similar to this human behavior. Other possible causes that scientists have found include: Early weaning – on a similar note, other research has found that weaning kittens early can lead to a higher chance of them developing pica.Which makes a lot of sense, right? Those are scary things for our fur babies! It’s often linked to the stress of being in a new place and to the possible emotional effects of a kitten’s separation from their littermates. Rehoming – according to researchers, pica is most likely to affect your cat in the 2 months after they are rehomed.Interestingly though, neutering seems to have little effect on the symptoms. This means it could be linked to your furball reaching maturity (those pesky hormones!) and their first feelings of territorial behavior. Age – pica is most likely to affect your kitty during the first 4 years of their life, usually between 6 to 18 months.Breed – do you have a gorgeous Siamese or Birman? Did you know that these breeds are more prone to pica than others. There are a few things that could be causing your kitty’s chewing habits. The name pica comes from the Latin word for magpie – as these birds are renowned for their unusual ability and willingness to eat pretty much anything. Unlike eating grass, which some cats may be doing to help them with any stomach issues, pica sufferers will usually be drawn to chewing anything – even things that could cause them to get really sick. What this means is that an animal suffering from pica has the desire and drive to eat items that are not providing them with any nutritional or health benefits. Pica is categorized scientifically as “the compulsive eating of non-nutritive substances”. While a little playful chewing is normal, pica is potentially dangerous for our fur babies, specifically because what they end up eating really isn’t good for them! This is why it’s important to understand what drives our kitties to chew.īecause the more we know, the better we can care for our beloved fluff balls, right? So let’s get started! Although it is polycarbonate built, it does not feel cheap at all. Classic NegĪnd according to my hands-on, it feels great to hold. This material has a thermal expansion rate similar to that of aluminium and it also has a high affinity to metal parts which contributes to high-quality product manufacturing. It also sits right between the 27mm and 33mm of what Fujifilm has offered.Īt an equivalent to 45mm in full-frame, let’s dive in and see how this lens can actually perform.Īccording to the official, the build of this lens is made out of a type of polycarbonate called “Thermally Stable Composite” (TSC). And then, Sigma comes with this 30mm focal length and this is an interesting focal length to compete with many 35mm lenses in the Fuji market. 30mm f1.4 Contemporary DC DN 30mm f1.4 Contemporary DC DNģ5mm (50mm in full-frame equivalent) is a very popular focal length among all others. 6 years later, X-mount is the latest mount in the Sigma family. It was introduced with various mounts (i.e. Sigma 30mm f1.4 Contemporary DC DN (I will just call it Sigma 30mm in short for the rest of the review) was announced back in February 2016. I appreciate his support to make this review a reality. Also, I will be reviewing the Fuji X-T2 when I get my own copy in, and I’m going to get my hands on that new XF 23mm f2.First of all, allow me to thank Mr Lawson from Sigma Marketing (Singapore) for loaning me the Sigma 30mm f1.4 Contemporary DC DN lens for a review. At $339, it’s about $259 cheaper than the Panasonic.Īnyway, expect my 12mm Summilux review on Tuesday, and expect the Sigma 30mm f1.4 review coming very soon after that. Getting back on point, you’re also getting all of this Sigma goodness for a fantastic price in my opinion. For instance, I actually prefer shooting with a 40mm over a 35mm. But that’s me I prefer odd focal lengths for some reason. Plus, it’s built pretty good, and while the focal lengths are similar, I actually prefer the slightly longer focal length of the Sigma over the Summilux. I have to admit, I shoot more stopped down these days but this lens is bringing back the love I had for shallow depth of field images. It’s bitingly sharp, I love the color rendering, and the bokeh looks incredible to my eyes. Simply put, I just really love what the Sigma 30mm f1.4 lens produces. I’ve actually used the 25mm Summilux quite a bit in the past, and I have to say, while I haven’t done side by side comparisons between these two lenses, I might actually have a new favorite standard focal length for the micro four thirds system. So far, this Sigma has been pretty awesome.Īs many of you know, this lens is a 60mm equivalent on a micro four thirds body, and I’d consider it a standard focal length, so the lens I would naturally compare it to in my mind is the Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 25mm f/1.4 ASPH. Since I’ve been shooting with the Pen-F, I also decided to test the Sigma 30mm f1.4 DC DN Contemporary lens. For now, these images are coming from a different lens. As some of you know, I’ve been testing out the new Panasonic 12mm Summilux f1.4, and I will publish my review on Tuesday. I just wanted to share a few images I’ve taken over the week. I’m going to keep this post short, since a lot of you are probably at the beach right now :). I hope all of you are enjoying the Labor Day Weekend or as some refer to it as the unofficial end of summer. Bokeh From The Sigma 30mm f1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens: Almost all activities require a certain amount of download speed, so this is the main number you’ll want to pay attention to when deciding how much internet speed you need. Download Speedĭownload speed refers to how quickly your connection can retrieve data from a website or server online. Some do, however, including Skype and other video chat services, online gaming, and large cloud storage applications like Dropbox and Google Drive. In short, most activities online do not require high upload speeds. This number is often not the one heavily advertised by service providers online, and this is on purpose. Upload speed refers to how quickly your connection can send something (data, in this case) from your device to the wider internet. In order to better understand your internet speed test, it is vital to know the difference between upload speed and download speed. Understanding Your Internet Speed Test Results The speeds advertised by internet providers are based on the speed you get with a device wired directly to the router using an ethernet cable. Keep in mind that using WiFi tends to reduce performance. This will often solve the issue, but not always. If you test your connection multiple times and find that you aren’t getting what you’re paying for, we recommend reaching out to your ISP for help. Running our internet speed test is the best way to determine if your provider is actually holding up their end of the bargain. Then there’s the flipside you may be paying for speeds you’re not actually getting. Based on the information above, if you find that your internet speeds are higher than needed, we’d recommend reaching out to your ISP (Internet Service Provider) and switching to a lower-cost plan. You may be paying for more speed than you actually need, and these additional fees could be costing you month after month. For one, it could potentially save you some money. In the spring, bumble bee queens establish their nests in abandoned rodent holes, tree cavities, under piles of debris and sometimes under a step or even in your home’s insulation. Once you’ve determined the type of bee you have, determining the next course of action is easiest once you understand its life cycle. Although honey bees in Alberta are typically all one species there is a fair amount of variability in the coloration (i.e., there are lighter coloured honey bees and darker coloured honey bees). Honey bees are medium-sized bees with a moderate amount of hair on their thorax (middle body segment) and dark brown and light brown striping on their abdomen. Some are black with hairy bellies (an adaptation for carrying pollen), while others are shiny green or blue. Tunnel nesting bees like leaf cutter bees, mason bees, small carpenter bees, etc, are often medium-sized bees that nest in hollow stems or decaying wood. They are typically not very hairy especially compared to bumble bees, but some are very hairy! These come in all shapes and sizes, but are typically small to medium-sized bees that can be black, black with white stripes, dark or brilliant metallic green. However, there are many other types of bees in Alberta. Many of us are familiar with bumble bees as they are large, hairy and obvious. And therefore, the first step is to identify what kind of insect you have. That is very exciting! Your level of excitement might depend on the type of insect that you are dealing with. First of all, congratulations! Some sort of insect has decided to live in your yard. I’ve been in Zen practice for many years. I think there is something in that which is profound. It has something to do with other ideas, one of them is the idea of becoming, making a work is not just the making of a thing, it is an act of becoming. It is a speculative place that artists can go to, and many artists have attempted to go there I’m thinking of course of Barnett Newman, but there are many. Where was I before I was born, what is it that makes me me, where do I go after I die? In other words, what is this thing that I call life, what is this recognition of life as an actual phenomenon, where does it come from? How do I know of myself or of anything else? Consciousness in other words. Science does lots of things wonderfully, explains all kinds of phenomena but it has not been able to really address consciousness. Only one who has passed through it will know what it means while there will be no words for it.ĪK He has got to be talking about consciousness! This is one area in which science has been rather poor. Human science is not capable of understanding it, nor the experience of describing it. MD I’m going to read a quote to you, which I think relates to that. Beuys used the term, but it is not just Beuys. Picasso as a shaman, that is absolutely correct. What Jung didn’t see was that Picasso was fighting evil with evil, because it is the only way to fight evil and that this is fundamentally shamanistic journey. What John Richardson says, in his immense foresight and wisdom, is that Jung was not into the art world, didn’t understand where these images came from and couldn’t read them. Carl Gustav Jung wrote about the show and said, this man is definitely schizophrenic, he is schizoid in his weird unimaginable grotesque images, etc. He talks about a retrospective that Picasso had in 1932, in the lead up to the war at the Museum of Fine Arts in Zurich. In John Richardson's brilliant biography of Picasso. It is tautologically ridiculous on one level, I’m not Christ, I don’t intend to be Christ, thank you. To foolishly, idiotically, gather the tools that make it possible to make a shamanistic journey, because it can’t be anything else into the unknown, into what it means to touch the unknown. What I’m trying to say is that is the job of the artist. But even the great hero needs a staff or a stick, he can’t go in empty handed. Christ is descending as the great hero into a space of limbo. In the painting, Christ is holding a stick and he is about to enter the cave, he is about to sub-verse the dark cave which the darkness spreads out from. I think of Mantegna’s Descent into Limbo, my favorite painting of all time. So, how do you find out what you don’t know? I mean, that is an impossible question. It is what I don't know that I am interested in. It is the artist’s job, I believe, to be somehow fearless, adventurous, to go into an unknown space. Do you consider yourself more of an inventor or a discoverer?ĪK What I’ve said very often, is that I don’t care for what I know, and I don’t suppose anybody else cares either. Tagliatelle is the traditional accompaniment for ragú Bolognese, with enough heft and flavor to stand up to the rich meat sauce. It’s said that the perfect dough for tagliatelle should be rolled so thin that, if held up to a window, you should be able to see Bologna’s hilltop Basilica di San Luca through the dough. To this day, the last day of the Verona carnival is led by the Papà di Gnocco (“Gnocchi’s Father”), a person in a gaudy costume who carries a huge fork topped with gnocchi.Įmilia-Romagna and Piedmont: Truffle tagliatelleĪ fresh pasta made with egg, tagliatelle’s long ribbons are an icon of Bologna, the capital city of Emilia-Romagna. In Verona, a grain shortage at the time of the pre-Lent carnival threatened to cut short the festivities until a local nobleman donated a hefty sum to buy flour that could be stretched out with boiled potato to make the delicious dumplings. Potatoes were brought to Europe from the Andes by Spanish explorers, and slowly crossed the continent starting in the 1500s. So while the basic formula for gnocchi, a rough dough that is cut into small chunks and then boiled, dates back to antiquity and can be found in many forms across the country, the popular potato-based version is unmistakably northern. Northern Italy does not have the rich pasta tradition that many regions to the south do-the cool, mountainous lands bordering Austria, Switzerland, and France have a unique culinary sensibility that integrates the foods of their neighbors, often using grains such as buckwheat and rye rather than plain wheat flour. Just as the different regions of Italy have their own recipes, techniques, and beloved ingredients, some pasta shapes are inextricably linked to their birthplace.įrom north to south, follow along on our tour of some of the most iconic regional pasta shapes across Italy. From the couldn’t-be-simpler dough of flour and water that the Romans called laganum, pasta has evolved to a truly magnificent family of unique dishes, united in their deliciousness. But the history of pasta is long and twisting-like a piece of fusilli lunghi-with innovations and experimentations taking place over the centuries in different parts of the country. To outsiders, pasta can seem like a universally Italian delicacy, served up in different shapes but essentially all one food. Now that you have your colored pasta, you can get to work on your crafts! Take a look at the 25 macaroni art crafts I’ve listed below and let me know which one you’d like to try first. If there’s one Italian food known the world round, it’s pasta.

Wojcik OP, Koenig KL, Zeleniuch-Jacquotte A, Costa M, Chen Y. Newborns, patients with restricted diets, or patients with various diseases may be depleted in taurine and can benefit from supplementation. Dietary intake and sulfur amino metabolism are usually more than adequate to meet the body’s needs. Taurine is found in breast milk, but it is also routinely added to infant formulas.Īlthough taurine is very beneficial, it is often unnecessary to supplement. The human fetus has no ability to synthesize taurine. Recent work has revealed taurine’s action in the retina as a photoreceptor cell promoter. Moreover, severe taurine extravasation from cardiomyocytes during an ischemia–reperfusion insult may increase ventricular remodeling and heart failure risk. Because of these effects, experimental evidence shows promise for taurine therapy in preventing cardiac damage during bypass surgery, heart transplantation and myocardial infarction. Taurine is thought to be involved in cell volume regulation and intracellular free calcium concentration modulation. Taurine has been shown to be a protector of endothelial structure and function after exposure to inflammatory cells, their mediators, or other chemicals. Because taurine’s main physiologic role is in bile acid conjugation in the liver, it has been demonstrated that taurine is capable of reducing plasma LDL, total lipid concentration, and visceral fat in diabetic, obese patients. In cardiovascular disease, taurine’s benefits are multifactorial. Taurine is extensively involved in neurological activities, (calming neural excitability, cerebellar functional maintenance, and motor behavior modulation), through interaction with dopaminergic, adrenergic, serotonergic, and cholinergic receptors, and through glutamate. In the CNS, taurine is second only to glutamate in abundance. It has been proposed that taurine acts as an antioxidant, intracellular osmolyte, membrane stabilizer, and a neurotransmitter. Taurine is mainly obtained via dietary sources (dairy, shellfish, turkey, energy drinks), but can also come from sulfur amino acid metabolism (methionine and cysteine). Taurine’s highest concentration is in muscle, platelets, and the central nervous system. In most tissues, it remains a free amino acid. It takes part in biochemical reactions and is not fully incorporated into proteins. Taurine differs from other amino acids because a sulfur group replaces the carboxyl group of what would be the nonessential amino acid, β-alanine.
